Phone quality is fine. You don't need a DSLR. What you need is clarity — the AI needs to clearly see your facial structure, skin tone, and features to reproduce them accurately.
What doesn't work: bathroom mirror selfies (the lighting is usually terrible), photos where you're far away, heavily filtered or edited photos (the AI gets confused by unrealistic skin), and photos with heavy makeup or face paint.
